2020: A Year to Remember

|

Yes, I said it. I went there. For me, at least, I want to remember 2020. I need to remember. I hear all the time that folks just want to forget 2020 because of all the bad things that happened. And while it would be easier to just forget 2020, to put it behind us and move on, I have instead tried to find lessons learned. I suspect that many of us lost loved ones, family members and friends to this terrible pandemic. The losses are real. The broken hearts are real. The tears shed are real. The feelings of helplessness are real. Real people lost real grandmothers, fathers, sisters, nephews, the list goes on and on. Business closings and the loss of jobs are real. School closings and the loss of education are real. Many great minds say the effect of this tragedy will be felt for years to come, and I suspect they are correct.

But if you are reading this, you are alive. You survived what is said to be the worst year ever. Maybe it was. You survived what is said to be the worst pandemic in modern history. Maybe it was. You survived the rioting and destruction of lives and property. You survived the fear of not knowing what the future holds. If you are reading this, you survived all of it. You are alive.

When we speak about our country, we are really talking about the people and citizens of the United States of America. The people of this great country we call the USA are resilient and refuse to just sit on the bench and watch the game. We engage with one another, we create hope for our neighbors, family and friends who have lost hope. We do what is needed at the time it is needed. We care, and we love. That is what makes our country great.

I work at a law firm that refused to sit on the bench and watch the game. We refused to shut the doors even for a day.  I am here more than I am not, engaging with real people. Their thoughts and concerns are real. I listen to their problems, their expectations, their fears and their dreams. I have learned countless lessons from what 2020 delivered to all of us.

The lesson is simple: don’t sit on the bench and just watch the game—get in the game. Engage with real people. Offer your ear and listen. Folks who have suffered tremendous loss need to be heard. They need solutions. Solutions bring hope. Hope brings dreams. Dreams make America great.

If you need me to get in the game, call me. I will answer. For as long as I am able, I will play the game.
