’Tis the season…for warm weather and motorcycles

Tis the season…warm weather and motorcycles. What could be better? The sounds, the sights, the smells. Obviously, I am talking about the sounds of loud pipes, freshly cleaned and polished motorcycles, and the smell of gas, oil and exhaust.  There’s nothing like it.

Maybe spring and summer will bring us a little less rain and more time to ride. I have friends heading to Daytona this week, Myrtle Beach in May, and all the events in between. That said, we should expect a lot of traffic this season. The economy is good, and bikers will spend a lot of time and money on the road. So will everyone else.

On two wheels, drivers must be careful and pay attention to their surroundings. I find myself getting into a zone quickly, enjoying what I see in front of me. Mountains, blue skies and stars at night. It is easy to drift off into a world of little stress, thinking about the next turn and adventure and where that might take me. However, bikers must watch for other vehicles, especially in front of you and behind you. Pay attention to quick stops and be ready to react. These situations are the most dangerous kind. When coming up on an intersection, keep eye contact with drivers pulling out, turning left or right. Make sure they see you. Many times they don’t.

I like my music loud, but I have learned to settle for medium as I have matured (I have not gotten older.) I find myself being able to react to my environment more quickly and safely. I have really changed my way of thinking regarding safety. You must have a plan and you must execute that plan with precision when an unforeseen event takes place. There are too many accidents that could have been avoided, whether your fault or the fault of the other guy. Sadly, many of these accidents are tragic, often fatal and final.

If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, please call on me. I can help. I am saddened every time I hear of a fatal crash, especially when it’s a biker. Have fun but pay attention.

Keep those pipes loud and shiny side up. Hope to see you out there.
