The 2021 South Carolina turkey season is here!

|

Turkey season in the Upstate of South Carolina officially kicks off today, April 1, 2021 in Game Zones 1 and 2. While our fellow hunters to the south have been hunting since March 22, it is time for the rest of us to get acquainted with some changes to the rules and regulations for the 2021 season.

This year, the season for hunters in the Upstate runs from April 1 to May 10, 2021. Much like recent years, the limit is 3 gobblers per season for residents and 2 per season for non-residents. An often-overlooked regulation is that each hunter can only take 1 gobbler in the first ten days of the season. If you are successful this weekend, make sure you wait before attempting to take another bird!

One new piece of technology, S.C. Game Check, is available to hunters this year. You are required to report your harvest by midnight on the day of harvest. This report is free and easy using either the new S.C. Game Check smart phone app (available for IOS and ANDROID), online at dnr.sc.gov, or by phone at 1-833-4SC-GAME ((864) 660-0465).

Finally, turkey tags have traditionally been free with the purchase of a S.C. license but this year, there is a $5.00 fee. You can order and pay for these tags online at sc.dnr.gov and in some instances, print temporary tags that allow for immediate use. Don’t hunt without them as each harvest is required to be timely tagged.

Make sure to get out and enjoy the warm weather and beauty of the outdoors this season. As always, be sure to follow the law and be safe while in the field. Best of luck!
